Busch Wildlife Sanctuary, Jupiter FL
September 24th, 2008 by Dan BodensteinI will be visiting the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary in Jupiter Florida this weekend. This sanctuary sprang to life in 1994 as a joint venture with the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Environmental Education Center and the Peter W. Busch Family Foundation. Since then, the sanctuary has provided veterinarian care to thousands of wild animals each year.
In addition to providing medical care, they rehabilitate animals in the hopes of returning them to the wild. On average 30%-35% of the animals treated at their wildlife hospital are returned to the wild. Many of their patients suffer from injuries that cause them permanent impairment, These animals cannot be returned to the wild, and become ambassadors of good will to the community. The Busch Wildlife Sanctuary offers educational programs, and community outreach programs to over 50,000 people annually. The wild animals offer the community up-close and personal experiences with nature, and helps Busch spread the message of respect for all living creatures.
The Sanctuary includes a nature trail, and a nature center. The nature trail takes visitors through oak hammocks, cypress wetlands and tall pines, while along the way exhibiting a variety of the animals cared for there. Bald Eagles, panthers, bobcats, foxes and more currently reside at this facility.
Their nature center offers hands-on interactive displays meant to educate people on the fragility and necesseity of our animal friends.
Recently, a rare black bobcat was found, and brought to the center for care. There had been an underlying mystery in Florida of people saying they’ve seen a Black Panther, when in fact it may have been this rare bobcat.
The sanctuary is a non-profit organization, and has a large staff of volunteers to help keep the facility running. Their gift shop also helps support the costs necessary to provide such a needed service.
