Egyptian Goose
November 20th, 2008 by Dan BodensteinMy wife often says that our home attracts rare, odd, or injured animals. I tend to believe her. Yesterday, an Egyptian Goose showed up in our back yard with the other Muscovy and Mottled Ducks that usually appear.
After doing some research we found that the Egyptian goose is native to Africa, not North America. Images of the goose were often found in Egyptian writings, and were considered sacred. They prefer almost any wetland areas especially if they are open areas. They feed on grasses, seeds, leaves, and plant stems, but occasionally will eat small insects or worms.
Although they usually travel in pairs, this little female was alone. Females tend to “honk” while the males tend to hiss. This morning, she honked.
Here is a picture of her I took this morning using a flash …
She’s appeared in our lives for a reason, now I have to figure out why.
