Finding Great Locations to Photograph Nature in the City

February 21st, 2009 by Dan Bodenstein

If you are a photography buff and live in a large city, you may have dreamed of living closer to nature to be able take beautiful photos of landscapes and wildlife.  You can turn your dream into a reality without ever leaving the city.  There are many beautiful locations right in your city that look just like the nature settings you would find in the country.  As a photographer, you are in control of what your camera lens sees.  Zoos, floral gardens, conservation centers and public parks are great places for you to take nature photos without leaving the city.  Unfortunately, you won’t have the opportunity to shoot the waves crashing on a beach, but you can find many ways to take nature photos of many different animals and landscapes from a different perspective right in your own city.

Many photographers enjoy taking pictures of wildlife.  Animals can be a challenge because they move so quickly and are often afraid of people.  Try to find a spot where you can see them, but they can’t see you.  Be patient and relax and wait for the best shot.  Shoot your photos from several different angles to get the best photos.  Lighting is an important aspect of photography.  The best outdoor lighting conditions are between daybreak and sunset.  This is when you will find the most natural and diffused lighting conditions.  If you have a window with a tree close by, you can get some great photos of the birds right through the window.  Just make sure that the window is clean and the screen has been removed.

Take a long walk around a public park or garden and you will find many beautiful subjects to photograph.  You will see several different types of beautiful flowers in various colors and sizes.  Try shooting a group of flowers and then use the macro button on your camera and take a photo of just one flower.  Public zoos are also great place to take nature photos.  Many zoos house the animals in their natural habitats making it very easy for you to get some great photos using a zoom lens.

If you have a long weekend coming up and you do some online research ahead of time, you will find stunning natural locations within an hour or two of your city that will provide you with unlimited possibilities of nature photo opportunities.  Your city friends will be amazed at your great photos.

Wildlife sanctuaries are the best places to photograph animals in their natural states. Taking photo there is really a tough job as animals mostly remain moving. Finding out the safe locations to sit prior to their coming may be good solution. Though it is a time taking process but the quality of photo and appreciations will tell you that it was worth to spend some more time.
